    “We thought about what we could do for men who view shopping as task-based. They want to come in, get what they need and get out,” Stiff said. The duo achieved that goal by grouping items together clearly. Velvetmen and Martin T-shirts hang neatly according to color while pants and shorts line the opposite wall.

    The Houston climate, and the ability to create multiple looks with a handful of pieces are also well-planned. As a result, most of the clothes can be worn throughout the year.

    It’s hard to imagine a pair of jeans could change your life, but Darlene Fiske says hers from CJ by Cookie Johnson did.

    “I’ve never had a pair of jeans that fit like this,” said Fiske, who owns a public relations firm in Austin and started wearing the jeans in November. “It’s shocking how many compliments I get, and my butt looks so small, and I look so thin. Those are the things that speak to me, and I never thought I’d find jeans to fit like that.”

    The CJ by Cookie Johnson denim line was started in 2009 by Cookie Johnson, wife of NBA legend Magic Johnson, and Michael Glasser, the premium denim guru who founded Seven for All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity and Rich & Skinny denim lines. CJ jeans are designed for women sizes 2-18 with fuller thighs, bottoms and hips.

    Johnson was at Nordstrom in Houston recently to meet customers and talk about her denim line. She says her jeans are designed with more room in the thighs, a higher rise in the back, lower rise in the front (to avoid the “mom” jeans look) and are tapered in at the waist with a silk lining for comfort.

    After the jeans were featured on Oprah Winfrey’s television show in November, sales skyrocketed. “The Oprah effect is real,” Johnson said. “We were doing really well before the show, but when Oprah said she loved the jeans, our sales went through the roof. The Nordstrom store in Chicago was nearly out of jeans by the end of that day.”

    Fiske’s jeans were a gift from her mother-in-law, who had seen Winfrey rave about them on her show.

    “Oprah was so right,” Fiske said. “There’s something magical about the pockets and how they make your butt look.”

    CJ by Cookie Johnson jeans are carried in 100 Nordstrom stores nationwide and available at Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and 400 speciality stores.

    In just a year, the company made a profit in a recession, said Johnson, who also has a degree in retailing from Michigan State University.

    “That’s almost unheard of for a new company,” she said.

    CJ jeans come in seven styles, including a popular denim legging, and sell for $112 to $180.

    Johnson credits Joie Rucker, the designer and co-founder of Rich & Skinny jeans, for actually designing the collection, though the two collaborated on the details. Each style also is designed to fit curvy teens as well as women into their 70s of all ethnicities.

    So what does Magic Johnson think?

    “I had complained about jeans for so long and wanted to start my own line,” she said. “He finally said, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it!’ ”
